Instagram, Facebook and Twitter have made use of a personal blog or an updates section obsolete in some ways, with so many channels to update (and keep active lest the algorithm punishes you), the website gets neglected. I have come to realize for all the effort I’ve put into Instagram, I’ve had little reward from it. A meaningless follower count and mindless likes from people scrolling passed the work at 100mph, unable to appreciate it properly because its 300 pixels across.
In an effort to invest more time in my website and practice talking about my work, I’ve decided to bring back the blog. I know, retro. Starting slow, I will be using this as a space to elaborate more on the things I would usually post to instagram like, process, the latest sketches or studies, new work and assorted musings.
The piece above is an automatic gouache & colored pencil painting. I’ve been seeing this combination of mediums pop up a lot on my feed lately and I wanted to give it a go. The subject matter is open to interpretation, as I kind of let my hand wander across the page. For color I gravitate to one of my favorite palettes, a warm juicy set of pinks, reds, oranges and yellows that evoke something organic and familiar. Adding the colored pencil accents was interesting. Some pencil colors marked better than others, and I realized too late – that perhaps I was painting too thick for the technique.
I do really like the effect and hope to play more with it in the future. Experimenting with mediums is half the fun for me, some recent experiments included ink and oil pastels which you can see here.
